What defines security?

An exact description is impossible to define. It includes so many areas & is ever changing. In general:

Computer security is the prevention of attackers gaining unauthorised access to or unauthorised use of computers & computer networks.

Security expert Bruce Shneier, sees security as:

a process & a state of mind, NOT just a product or a collection of products installed on a company's network..

Today, online security is critical to maintain success, profitability & reputation. Many companies now use on-line connections as a medium to communicate, trade in e-commerce & share information.

The Internet is inherently insecure as it is an open network. This means that anyone with a computer & an Internet Service Provider can connect to the Internet.

Most people use the Internet without malice, but Internet based attacks can cause critical problems to computer networks, e-mail systems, individual machines or files.

Of course, security has always been vital, but the need for on-going security technologies & protection is critical to protect business or personal communications & processes.
